THE CHALLENGE
The short-term rental market was operating in an information vacuum that disadvantaged both guests and property owners.
As tourism and business travel continue to evolve globally, the demand for short-term accommodations has skyrocketed. Yet, unlike the hotel industry with its standardized rating systems, the shortlet market remains wildly inconsistent. With no reliable review system, guests routinely encounter properties that don't match their expectations or online listings.
Meanwhile, property owners have no efficient channel to showcase their accommodations, address concerns, or build their reputation. This disconnect creates friction in the market and prevents the ecosystem from maturing.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Creating a dedicated platform for honest shortlet reviews and property management.
When I joined the ShortletReview project, I recognized immediately that we weren't just building another review platform—we were creating essential infrastructure for an evolving market. Our vision was to build a platform where:
Property owners could claim their listings and respond to feedback
Both sides could communicate directly when needed
Future guests could make informed decisions based on authentic reviews
Guests could share honest experiences about their stay
RESEARCH PHASE
72%
reported discrepancies between online listings and actual properties
88%
relied on word-of-mouth recommendations due to lack of trustworthy reviews
83%
struggled with managing their online reputation across multiple platforms
THE DESIGN SOLUTION
I designed an intuitive review flow that makes leaving detailed feedback effortless., Building trust, one review at a time.
ANTICIPATED IMPACT & OUTCOMES
I anticipate a measurable increase in property quality as owners respond to consistent feedback, fostering a virtuous cycle of improvement driven by review transparency.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
This project has taught me several valuable lessons:
Verification is everything - In marketplaces with limited trust, robust verification processes are not optional but foundational.
Balance power dynamics - By giving both guests and hosts appropriate tools, we can create healthier interactions than platforms that favor one side.
Contextualize for specific needs - Standard review categories from global platforms often miss critical factors that matter to specific user segments.
Design for behavior change - The "improvement tracker" feature helps owners identify and address common complaints, encouraging continuous enhancement.
